In analogy with the hydrosilylation reaction (Section 1.3.4.5.1), hydrogen hexachloroplatinate(IV) and cis-dichlorobis(triphenylphosphine)platinum(II) are very effective catalysts for the hydrogermylation of alkynes.[‌169‌‌171‌] The isomerization reaction in the presence of these catalysts is very slow compared to the rate of addition. The relative amounts of the three addition isomers (Scheme 65) depends on the catalyst, the hydrogermane, the ratio of alkyne/[X3GeH], and the concentration of the catalyst. In general, hydrogermylation of terminal alkynes affords (E)-1-(germyl)alkenes (E)-109 preferentially. Similar conditions can be employed for the hydrogermylation of alkenes.[‌172‌]
