Bis(alkene)(η5-pentaalkylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt(I) complexes are conveniently prepared by a sodium amalgam reduction of the dimeric compounds [Co2(C5R15)2X2] in the presence of an excess of the requisite alkene (Scheme 4). The starting materials for the syntheses, the (η5-pentaalkylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt(II) halide dimers [Co2(C5R15)2X2] (X=Cl, I), are readily obtained by well-documented procedures either from octacarbonyldicobalt(0)[‌23‌] or from cobalt(II) halides.[‌24‌]
