Tetracarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)vanadium (14) is one of the most important organovanadium complexes, because the carbonyl ligands can be replaced by various other ligands to afford a number of derivatives. This complex is obtained from vanadocene by reduction with sodium or potassium sand under atmospheric pressure of carbon monoxide (Scheme 10).[45,57] The key intermediate is M+[V(Cp)2]− (M = Na, K), which rapidly reacts with carbon monoxide with loss of alkali metal cyclopentadienide to afford complex 14. The product can be isolated by sublimation in vacuo from MCp. The same complex can be obtained by in situ generation of vanadocene from anhydrous vanadium(III) chloride and sodium cyclopentadienide, followed by reaction with carbon monoxide at high temperature (Scheme 10).[58,59] The product is isolated in moderate yield by careful handling of the reaction mixture under an argon atmosphere.
