The reaction of tetracarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)vanadium with isonitriles is a typical example of direct ligand substitution.[‌146‌] It proceeds in refluxing toluene, requiring a considerably long reaction time. Use of palladium(II) oxide as the catalyst remarkably shortens the reaction time to give the corresponding isocyanide complexes 44. Either mono-, di-, or trisubstituted complexes can be prepared in high yields by changing the molar ratios of tetracarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)vanadium and substituted isocyanide, R1NC (R1=Me, iPr, t-Bu , C6H11, Bn, 2,6-Me2C6H3) (Scheme 35).[‌146‌]
