2.10.2.1 Method 1: Titanium–Tetraene Complexes by Reaction of Tetrabutoxytitanium(IV) with Cyclooctatetraene

Bis(cyclooctatetraene)titanium (4) is synthesized by the reaction of tetrabutoxytitani­um(IV) with cyclooctatetraene and triethylaluminum [Ti(OBu)4/cot/Et3Al 1:10:10] at 80°C (Scheme 4).[‌52‌] Complex 4 is obtained as violet-red crystals from hot toluene in 80% yield. Tris(cyclooctatetraene)dititanium (5) is obtained similarly, as yellow crystals (80%), when the reactants [Ti(OBu)4/cot/Et3Al] are used in the molar ratio 1:2:10 (Scheme 4). Interconversion between [Ti(η6-cot)2] (4) and [Ti2(η6-cot)3] (5) occurs as shown in Scheme 4.[‌52‌] The structure of [Ti2(η6-cot)3] (5) has been determined by X-ray crystallography.[‌53‌]
