Simplified syntheses for the preparation of titaniumtrienyl complexes, avoiding the use of bis(toluene)titanium(0), have been reported. Sodium amalgam reduction of titanium(IV) chloride in toluene in the presence of more than 5 equivalents of cycloheptatriene and a ligand L (L=PMe3, TMEDA, DMPE) gives 20 in moderate yields [L2=2PMe3 (10%); TMEDA (27%); DMPE (44%)] (Scheme 8).[‌66‌]
