Simplified syntheses for the preparation of titanium–trienyl complexes, avoiding the use of bis(toluene)titanium(0), have been reported. Sodium amalgam reduction of titanium(IV) chloride in toluene in the presence of more than 5 equivalents of cycloheptatriene and a ligand L (L = PMe3, TMEDA, DMPE) gives 20 in moderate yields [L2 = 2PMe3 (10%); TMEDA (27%); DMPE (44%)] (Scheme 8).[66]
