The complicated history of “titanocene” and its hydride derivatives has been reviewed.[207] The reaction of solid [Ti(Me)2(Cp)2] (85) with hydrogen leads to the formation of violet dimeric titanocene complex 86 in 70% yield (Scheme 41).[208] If 86 is allowed to stand at room temperature in an inert atmosphere over a prolonged period, gray-green polymeric titanocene hydride 87 forms (Scheme 41).[208] Complex 87, whose reactivity is similar to that of complex 86, is also synthesized by treatment of a saturated solution of [Ti(Me)2(Cp)2] (85) in hexanes with an excess of hydrogen at a low temperature (Scheme 41).[208]
