2.10.11.2 Method 2: (η2-Alkene)bis(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)titanium(II) Complexes by Reduction of Dichlorobis(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) by Sodium Amalgam in the Presence of an Alkene

Mikami, K.; Matsumoto, Y.; Shiono, T.Science of Synthesis, (20032565.

[Ti(Cp*)2(H2C=CH2)] (263) has been prepared by the reduction of [Ti(Cp*)2Cl2] (104) by sodium amalgam in toluene at 25°C under an ethene atmosphere. It forms lime-green crystals in an 80% yield. The structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography.[‌379‌] The bonding with ethene is characterized by extensive backbonding. The CC bond length of 0.1438(5) nm is longer than that of free ethene (0.1337nm), and the hydrogen atoms are bent away from the metal, so that the CH2 plane forms an angle of 35° with the CC axis.
