The great majority of zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives are prepared from dichlorobis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium and -hafnium, respectively (Scheme 17).[10] They, in turn, are prepared by the reaction of zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) chloride with a metal cyclopentadienide, where the metal is usually an alkali metal, such as lithium, sodium, or potassium, e.g. formation of 41 (Scheme 18).[10] Although dibromobis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)- or bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)diiodometal complexes of zirconium and hafnium can be similarly prepared from the corresponding metal(IV) bromide or iodide, respectively, it may be more convenient and economical to prepare these derivatives from the dichlorobis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)metal complexes, e.g. formation of 42 and 43, respectively (Scheme 19).[10]
