Organozirconium(IV) and -hafnium(IV) compounds represented by [M(Cp)2RX], where R and X are organo and nonorgano groups, respectively, are the most abundant subclass of the known organozirconium and -hafnium derivatives. In addition, there are many compounds containing modified cyclopentadienyl ligands. Transmetalation, hydrometalation, carbometalation, and oxidative addition (Scheme 1) are the four general methods used for the preparation of bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)monoorganozirconium(IV) and -hafnium(IV) complexes and their derivatives; of these four methods, transmetalation and hydrometalation, in particular hydrozirconation, are the two most widely used.
