It is believed that the formation of cationic zirconocene derivatives [Zr(Cp)2R1]+ is important for zirconocene-based alkene polymerization. In order to activate such catalysts, a Lewis acidic cocatalyst is required, such as methylaluminoxane, alkylaluminum halides, or dehydroxylated alumina. Accordingly, the preparation and reactions of this type of complex have been intensively studied. From the viewpoint of organic synthesis, these cationic bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium and -hafnium complexes are useful for insertion reactions of unsaturated compounds into Zr—C bonds.
