“Ate” complexes of zirconium and hafnium may be defined as bimetallic or multimetallic complexes in which zirconium and hafnium are considered to be formally negatively charged, irrespective of their oxidation state and electron count. For those zirconium and hafnium complexes containing two or one cyclopentadienyl ligands, the following “ate” complexes are conceivable among others (Table 15). In reality, however, those with 14 or less valence shell electrons may be additionally ligated.
