None of the bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(IV) “ate” complexes containing one or more organo groups discussed in Sections 2.11.10.1 and 2.11.10.2, apart from 498 (R1 = Ph), have been obtained as crystalline compounds suitable for X-ray analysis. Consequently, their structures remain as no more than reasonable suggestions. Since 1998, however, several zwitterionic bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(IV) derivatives containing two or three Zr—C σ-bonds have been obtained as crystalline compounds, and their structures have been determined by X-ray analysis.[424–426] These studies have clearly established the existence of stable bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium(IV) “ate” complexes. Most of these compounds have been prepared by the reaction of 1,1-bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)-2-(diphenylphosphino)-1-zirconaindene (536) with appropriate π-compounds, as shown in Scheme 190.
