The metathetical reaction between bis(tetrahydrofuran)samarium(II) iodide and 1 equivalent of K2C8H8 in tetrahydrofuran leads to formation of the tetrahydrofuran-insoluble neutral bis(cyclooctatetraenyl)samarium(II) complex, Sm(C8H8).[‌405‌] When 2 equivalents of K2C8H8 are used in this reaction, the tetrahydrofuran-soluble potassium salt complex [K2Sm(C8H8)2] is formed.[‌405‌] The metathetical reactions between mono(pentaalkylcyclopentadienyl)samarium(II) iodides and cyclooctatetraenyldipotassium in toluene give the triple-decked cyclooctatetraenylpentaalkylcyclopentadienyl samarium(II) complexes 168 (Ln=Sm; R1=Me, Et) (Scheme 112).[‌406‌] In this synthesis, the use of the isolated ­mono(pentaalkylcyclopentadienyl)samarium(II) iodides (see Section 2.12.4.1) may not be necessarily required, as the reaction of bis(tetrahydrofuran)ytterbium(II) iodide with (pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)potassium and cyclooctatetraenyldipotassium in a molar ratio of 2:2:1 gives the analogous ytterbium(II) complex 168 (Ln=Yb; R1=Me) in high yield (Scheme 112).[‌407‌] The tetrahydrofuran solvates in 168 can be easily removed under vacuum to give the unsolvated complexes 169.[‌406‌,‌407‌] An analogous europium(II) complex, [{EuCp*(THF)2}2(cot)], has been prepared by reaction of europium(III) chloride with cyclooctatetraenyldipotassium and (pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)potassium, a process which is accompanied by reduction of europium(III) to europium(II).[‌408‌]
