In this procedure the product is obtained in a two-step reaction. In the first step, diethylamine is treated with dimethylcadmium in toluene to give (diethylamino)methylcadmium (12), and in the second step a cold solution of carbon disulfide or carbon diselenide in toluene is added to give the final product 13 by a formal insertion reaction (Scheme 13).[‌36‌]
