Tetrazoles are formed in the 1,3-dipolar cyclization reaction between silyl azides and nitriles,[‌18‌‌21‌] ketones,[‌22‌] carbodiimides,[‌15‌] or oxime esters.[‌23‌] The dimethyltin oxide or dibutyltin oxide catalyzed reaction between azidotrimethylsilane and alkyl or aryl cyanides in refluxing toluene affords tetrazoles 7 in high yields (Scheme 4).[‌21‌] The reaction is not sensitive to steric hindrance since ortho-substituted benzonitriles react to give tetrazoles in high yields.
