Borazine (25) (Scheme 16) is isoelectronic with benzene and is of theoretical interest as a result. Like benzene, it is a nonpolar liquid; however, the B—H and B—N linkages are highly susceptible to hydrolytic cleavage and it must be handled under standard vacuum or inert-gas atmospheres.[71] Borazine does not have general utility as a synthetic reagent, inasmuch as it is highly water sensitive, inconvenient to prepare, a slow hydroborating agent, and trifunctional. Nevertheless, borazine is of interest as a source of boron nitride and other ceramic or polymeric materials.[72] Hydroboration of alkynes by borazine can be used to make alkenylborazines.[72] Hydroboration of alkenes by borazine is catalyzed by carbonyl hydridotris(triphenylphosphine)rhodium(I). This type of catalyzed reaction with diethylborazine and poly(vinylsiloxanes) yields polymers useful for pyrolysis to boron-modified silicon carbide ceramics.[73]
