Unsubstituted borohydrides, such as sodium borohydride and lithium borohydride, are probably the most frequently used reducing agents in reductive transformations. Almost all the synthetically significant unsubstituted borohydrides are currently commercially available. One of the earliest reports on the synthesis of metal borohydrides gave the reaction of ethyllithium and diborane to form lithium borohydride.[18] More general syntheses of these compounds involve reaction of metal hydrides with diborane or alkyl borates. For example, sodium borohydride can be prepared by reacting sodium hydride with trimethyl borate at 250°C in the absence of a solvent (Scheme 2).[22]
