Boroxin-ring-containing additives Bx(n) {B3O3[O(CH2CH2O)nMe]3} were found to be compatible with a wide variety of polymer hosts. Polymer electrolytes 44–46 exhibiting room temperature conductivities of up to 10−5 S·cm−1 were obtained by incorporation of Bx(n) and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate into poly(methyl methacrylate) and propylene oxide–ethylene oxide copolymers (Scheme 24).[42]

Two methods have been used for the preparation of boroxin additives 44–46: reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether with boric acid to give polymers 44, or reaction with boric oxide to give polymers 45 and 46, as illustrated in Scheme 24. A variety of boroxin additives 44–46 with different oligoether side-chain lengths have been prepared.[42]
