Boroxin-ring-containing additives Bx(n) {B3O3[O(CH2CH2O)nMe]3} were found to be compatible with a wide variety of polymer hosts. Polymer electrolytes 4446 exhibiting room temperature conductivities of up to 105S·cm1 were obtained by incorporation of Bx(n) and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate into poly(methyl methacrylate) and propylene oxideethylene oxide copolymers (Scheme 24).[‌42‌]

Two methods have been used for the preparation of boroxin additives 4446: reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether with boric acid to give polymers 44, or reaction with boric oxide to give polymers 45 and 46, as illustrated in Scheme 24. A variety of boroxin additives 4446 with different oligoether side-chain lengths have been prepared.[‌42‌]
