General Introduction
Two types of boron-containing polymers can be distinguished: those containing boron in the main chain of the polymer and those bearing boron substituents on the periphery. Polymers with boron in the main chain can be prepared by several methods. One principal approach is the formation of polymers by hydroboration (Section 6.1.41.2) or alkoxyboration reactions (Section 6.1.41.5). In these reactions, bifunctional boron compounds are used together with bifunctional reagents, usually containing double or triple bonds. A second approach is the formation of (usually reversible) coordination compounds consisting of boron-containing bifunctional reagents and diamines or bis-polyols (Section 6.1.41.7). Polymers with boron on the periphery (i.e., not part of the main chain) can be obtained by polymerization of boron-containing monomer units (Section 6.1.41.6).
