Magnesium 2-ethoxyethoxide (3) decreases the activity of organolithium reagents to such an extent that they can be prepared in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of 0.5 equivalent of this alkoxide. This permits some unstable organolithiums to be generated and allows direct ortho-metalation to be suppressed if desired. Magnesium 2-ethoxyethoxide is readily prepared by the reaction of magnesium with 2-ethoxyethanol (Scheme 3).[7–9]
