General Introduction

Although not used as frequently as their lithium counterparts, magnesium amides are convenient bases for use in organic synthesis. Metalation with magnesium dialkylamides appears to be a promising alternative to metalation by the corresponding lithium amides; either bromomagnesium amides or magnesium bis-amides can be used. The magnesium reagents can be prepared by treating the amines with Grignard reagents or by reaction of the lithium amides with magnesium bromide. Magnesium bis(dialkylamide) compounds also serve as precursors of dialkylaminomagnesium hydrides, which are useful as reducing reagents for carbonyl compounds.
