As highlighted in the preceding discussion, by a judicious choice of a lithium amide base and appropriate reaction conditions, it is frequently possible to generate a lithium enolate regioselectively with the desired regio- and stereochemistry by quantitative deprotonation of the corresponding ketone. Nevertheless, a large arsenal of indirect methods for generating specific lithium enolates has been developed.[‌16‌‌18‌,‌27‌] Because they may offer some distinct advantages for the synthesis of particular α-substituted ketones, a brief description of some of the more important methods of this type is provided below.
