Treatment of 1,1-diarylalkenes with selenium oxychloride leads to the formation of the benzo[b]selenopheno[2,3-b]benzo[b]selenophenes 8; however, the yields are generally poor (Scheme 6).[25] The reaction presumably proceeds via an addition–electrocyclization–elimination sequence for each ring system formed and is reported to be inhibited by the presence of electron-withdrawing groups on the aromatic rings.
