Most indole syntheses which involve making the 1—2 and 2—3 bonds in the same pot depend on the generation of a nucleophilic benzylic carbon to react, in conjunction with a nucleophilic nitrogen, with an electrophile (the future α-carbon) to generate the heterocycle. The most obvious way in which to achieve this is via a N,C-dianion then reaction with an ester, or equivalent.
