(o-Nitroaryl)acetic acids/esters can be prepared in a number of ways: displacement of halogen ortho to an aromatic nitro group with malonate (1149 → 1150) then hydrolysis and nitro group reduction produces 1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-ones 1151 with loss of carbon dioxide (Scheme 425).[209,1264,1265]
