Malonaldehyde, especially in its tetraacetal form, is used for the synthesis of 3,4,5-unsubstituted pyrazoles. Substituted malonaldehydes are used for preparation of 3,5-unsubstituted pyrazoles 5 (Scheme 10). The reactions are usually carried out in ethanol in the presence of mineral acid as a catalyst.[‌80‌‌83‌]
