5-Phenyl-1,2,3,4-thiatriazole (37) is oxidized with peroxytrifluoroacetic acid to the 3-oxide 38. This compound is O-alkylated with triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate to give 3-ethoxy-5-phenyl-1,2,3,4-thiatriazol-3-ium tetrafluoroborate (39) which undergoes dealkylation to give the 3-oxide 38 on treatment with nucleophiles (Scheme 29).[81]
