As stated earlier, the metalated starting material is prepared in situ and not isolated. In (tetrazol-5-yl)lithium salts, the lithium atom can be replaced by nitrogen in moderate yields by reaction with a diazonium salt or with an azide. In the latter case, the triazene salt can in turn be converted into the amine by reaction with hydrogen iodide.[‌189‌]
