Conversion of a halogen substituent to a hydrogen substituent can be achieved through metalation followed by quenching with a proton source. So this method is related to the method in Section 14.3.1.4.3.1. Zinc is the metal of choice for this reaction (Scheme 67).[‌232‌,‌233‌] Interestingly, selective reduction of halogen substituents is possible. For instance, 4,6-dichloro-2H-pyran-2-one is reduced to afford 4-chloro-2H-pyran-2-one.[‌233‌]
