Stabilized sulfur ylides are obtained from the corresponding acylsulfonium salts, e.g. 38,[‌82‌] by deprotonation. They react with α,β-unsaturated aromatic ketones (e.g., 39) (Michael addition) to give the intermediate 2-(dimethylsulfonio)-1,5-dioxopentanes which lose dimethyl sulfide to form the corresponding unsaturated 1,5-dioxopentenes. Condensation with ammonium acetate gives aryl-substituted pyridines 40 (Scheme 14).[‌83‌]
