Relatively complex purine derivatives can be formed from acyclic precursors. These reactions are important as models for the prebiotic formation of purines[160] and, in particular, of those essential for living matter. Small molecules such as methane, ammonia, water, hydrogen cyanide, and carbon dioxide are used as acyclic precursors. These abiotic, prebiotic, or biogenetic syntheses were pioneered by S. Miller.[161,162]
