Dehalogenation of organo halides is of considerable importance in synthetic organic chemistry, and many approaches have been successfully employed to replace a halogen with a hydrogen. Existing methods include catalytic, electrocatalytic,[‌294‌] and photochemical reactions.[‌295‌,‌296‌] Thus, debromination of 8-bromo-2-deoxyguanosine to give 2-deoxyguanosine (105) is accomplished in high yield under neutral conditions in aqueous methanol by irradiation with visible light in the presence of methylene blue as a sensitizer and triethylamine as an electron donor (Scheme 65).[‌296‌]
