2-Arylphenanthreno[9,10-d][1,2,3]triazolium-1-arylimides 303, obtained by oxidation in two steps from 2,2′-diphenyldicarboxaldehyde bis(arylhydrazones) 302, react with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to give the corresponding betaines 304 (Scheme 87). The structure of the betaine 304 (Ar1 = 4-BrC6H4) has been confirmed by X-ray analysis. Diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate reacts in a similar manner, although less efficiently.[459]
