The cyclotetramerization of isoindolinediimine, an addition product of ammonia and phthalonitrile, is an efficient method for preparing metal phthalocyanines 1 (Scheme 13). It is particularly effective for the synthesis of PcSiCl2; an important intermediate for axially substituted derivatives and polymers.[21] The reaction is often carried out in a high-boiling solvent such as quinoline.[210] Sandwich complexes (e.g., Pc2Zr) can be prepared using this route.[181,211]
