Dichlorodifluoromethane (2) and trichlorofluoromethane (10) are commercially available. They are usually obtained from carbon tetrachloride by replacement of chlorine by fluorine atoms on reaction with antimony(III) fluoride in the presence of antimony(V) chloride (Scheme 5).[‌31‌] Reaction of carbon tetrachloride with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of antimony(V) chloride gives dichlorodifluoromethane (2) exclusively (94% yield) (Scheme 5).[‌32‌]
