A one-pot reaction mainly concerned with the conversion of aromatic aldehydes 5 into nitriles 6, that tolerates a variety of substituents such as hydroxy, ether, ester, and amide, involves treatment with 2 M ammonia solution in propan-2-ol, magnesium sulfate, and manganese(IV) oxide in tetrahydrofuran (Scheme 3).[4] The reaction, which also involves an aldimine intermediate, gives good yields of nitriles, and can even convert a dialdehyde into a dinitrile.
