Oxidative cleavage of the dimethylhydrazones of aldehydes 5, 7, and 9 has been conducted with magnesium monoperoxyphthalate hexahydrate (MMPP) (Scheme 3),[‌3‌] dimethyldioxirane (Scheme 4),[‌4‌] and hydrogen peroxide catalyzed with methyltrioxorhenium(VII) (MTO) (Scheme 5)[‌5‌] to form nitriles 6, 8, and 10, respectively, in good to excellent yields. The latter process can be carried out under mild conditions at 50°C and requires 2 equivalents of hydrogen peroxide.
