Polymer-supported chlorite[10] can be obtained readily from Amberlyst IRA 900 by ion exchange with sodium chlorite. This reagent is used for the conversion of many aldehydes into their respective carboxylic acids 47 in excellent yields, without any need for conventional workup procedures (Scheme 16). In addition, many common protecting groups, such as silyl, benzyl, or tetrahydropyranyl ethers, tert-butoxycarbonyl, benzyloxycarbonyl, acetyl, or acetonide units, survive the conditions of the oxidation. Significantly, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and epoxy aldehydes can also be converted into the corresponding acids without degradation by this procedure.
