The rearrangement of benzil (30, R1=R2=Ph) to benzilic acid (31, R1=R2=Ph) has been known since 1838, and in its most general form this rearrangement involves the base-mediated rearrangement of an α-diketone to an α-hydroxy acid.[‌92‌,‌93‌] The reaction is most commonly employed with bisaromatic diketones, and representative examples of this type of rearrangement are shown in Scheme 26.[‌94‌‌99‌]
