Relatively inaccessible tert-butyl esters can be obtained by treatment of primary alcohols with 4 equivalents of a 2:1 chromium(VI) oxide–pyridine complex at room temperature, followed by addition of tert-butyl alcohol. The method was developed for alcohols of the carbohydrate series, but is claimed to be general.[83]
