Heterogeneous transition-metal catalysts for hydrogenation are usually employed in the form of metals and their oxides or halides that are either unsupported or supported. Supported catalysts have many advantages over unsupported ones, so they are the most commonly used heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysts. The C=C bond is, in general, one of the functional groups that is most readily hydrogenated, unless highly substituted and/or strongly hindered. Scheme 53 shows several examples of hydrogenation of alkenes by various classical catalysts such as palladium[‌217‌] or palladium/carbon,[‌218‌] platinum(IV) oxide,[‌219‌] Raney nickel (e.g., reaction of 180 to give 181),[‌220‌] and platinum/carbon.[‌221‌] Dendrimer-encapsulated palladium nanoparticles as catalysts[‌222‌] and electrocatalytic hydrogenation[‌223‌] have also been studied.
