20.5.15.1.1.8 Method 8: Claisen Condensation of Acetates

DOI: 10.1055/sos-SD-020-01264

Beignet, J.Science of Synthesis, (2007201353.

The Claisen condensation of acetates under solvent-free conditions is an efficient and environmentally friendly procedure to access 3-oxobutanoates 40 (Scheme 17).[‌25‌] Heating a mixture of an acetate and potassium tert-butoxide provides higher yields than a traditional procedure using solvents. Another considerable advantage of operating under solvent-free conditions is that potassium tert-butoxide does not exchange its alkyl residue with that of the ester. A reaction between two different esters (known as a crossed Claisen condensation) gives mixtures of products and is normally of little synthetic value.
