The BaeyerVilliger oxidation of cyclic ketones represents a unique lactone synthesis in that it brings about the insertion of an oxygen atom next to the carbonyl group. The reaction was described in 1899 by Baeyer and Villiger using potassium monoperoxysulfate (KHSO5) as an oxidant.
