Carbonyl activated methylene compounds such as cycloalkanones, phenylacetone, acetophenone, ethyl malonate, and acetoacetates undergo condensation reactions with dichloromethylenedimethylammonium salts. In the case of cycloalkanones monocondensation with dichloromethylenedimethylammonium chloride, followed by hydrolysis, ­affords chlorocycloalkenylated amides 31, whereas cyclopentanone reacts twice with the same reagent to afford the trichloropentamethine cyanine 32. Hydrolysis of this salt is also readily accomplished giving the diamide 33 (Scheme 17).[‌24‌,‌25‌]
