No general method is available for the syntheses of all types of phosphorus-substituted ketene. Phosphorylketenes 44 and 45 are generally prepared from α-phosphorylcarboxylic acids or their derivatives, typically the acid chlorides, by elimination, or from α-diazo-β-oxophosphonates by photolytic or rhodium-catalyzed Wolff rearrangement (see Sections 23.6.2.1.1 and 23.6.2.1.2, respectively).
