Carboxylic acids can be converted directly into ketenes by pyrolysis. This method can be applied in the preparation of ethylketene (3) labeled at the central carbon with carbon-11. The labeled ketene is captured in solution by the phorbol ether 13 to give the phorbol derivative 14 acylated with [1-11C]butanoic acid (Scheme 4).[50]
