Esters can be homologated by means of an analogue of the ArndtEistert reaction involving ynolate intermediates (the Kowalski homologation). For example, the ynolate ion 125 generated from the ester 124 forms the ketene 126, which is captured as the homologous ester 127 (Scheme 39).[‌96‌]
