[(1-Hydroxy)alkyl]phosphonates are potent inhibitors of enzymes. The catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of 67 using a chiral rhodium catalyst gives, after hydrolytic removal of the benzoyl substituent, the desired [(1-hydroxy)alkyl]phosphonates 68 (Scheme 29).[80,81]
