The preparation of aldehydes from alkenes is possible by the formal anti-Markovnikov addition of water and the subsequent oxidation of the adducts. Typically, hydroboration followed by stronger oxidation conditions than sodium hydroxide/hydrogen peroxide treatment (which would give an alcohol) is the method of choice. Other oxidative procedures, especially Wacker oxidations, are successful in very special cases.
